Regarding the overview of the "Q1 2026 Crypto Industry Report" published by CoinGecko, a major cryptocurrency data provider.

暗号資産データ大手CoinGecko社が発表した「2026Q1仮想通貨業界レポート」の概要について

On April 16, 2026, major cryptocurrency data provider CoinGecko released its "Q1 2026 Crypto Industry Report." The total cryptocurrency market capitalization ended the first quarter (January–March) at $2.4 trillion, a 20.4% decrease (approximately $622 billion) from the previous quarter, remaining at a level roughly 45% below the October 2025 peak of approximately $4.27 trillion. CoinGecko pointed out that the market has transitioned from a rapid correction phase into a "sustained crypto winter." The primary drivers of the decline were the mid-January nomination of Kevin Warsh as the next Fed Chair (sparking concerns over a pivot toward monetary tightening) and military tensions between the U.S. and Iran. Bitcoin (BTC) fell by 22%, significantly underperforming the NASDAQ (-7.1%) and the S&P 500 (-4.8%). Regarding exchange trends, the spot trading volume of the top 10 centralized exchanges (CEX) plummeted 39.1% quarter-on-quarter to $2.7 trillion. The monthly volume for March stood at $800 billion, the lowest level since November 2023. Binance maintained a 37% market share, while MEXC was the only other exchange to secure a double-digit share at 10%. HTX's quarterly trading volume fell sharply from $294.4 billion in Q4 2025 to $133.6 billion, dropping to 10th place with a 4.9% market share. On the other hand, the market showed some resilience. The stablecoin market remained nearly flat at $309.9 billion, indicating that capital stayed within the ecosystem. While USDT saw its first supply decrease since Q2 2022 (-1.6%), USDC grew by 2.4% to $771 billion. Emerging issuers saw rapid growth, with Sky (USDS) increasing by 30.8% and WLFI (USD1) by 32.5%. A notable shift occurred in the derivatives structure. On the decentralized exchange Hyperliquid, the Open Interest (OI) for HIP-3 (builder-deployed perpetuals) surpassed $1.2 billion. Crude oil perpetuals (CL-USDC) emerged as the second most traded asset after BTC, with a 24-hour trading volume of $1.39 billion, surpassing Ethereum. Driven by the surge in crude oil prices due to Middle East tensions (up 76.9% in Q1), 24/7 decentralized exchanges (DEX) emerged as a "macro hedging infrastructure" filling the gaps during traditional market closures. ## Business Development Insights 1. Stablecoins Established as the "Next Revenue Layer" While the overall market is shrinking, stablecoins are the only segment where supply remains stable, clearly highlighting their role as an "anchor of liquidity." The fact that emerging issuers like USDS (+30.8%) and USD1 (+32.5%) are significantly outgrowing USDC (+2.4%) suggests there is room for new entrants offering "yield-bearing, regulation-compliant, and use-case-specific" differentiated stablecoins. For Japanese players, business opportunities lie in domestic tokens for B2B payments and remittances, supported by initiatives like the Tokyo Metropolitan Government's yen-based stablecoin support and Mitsui & Co.'s multi-chain expansion of Zipangcoin. 2. Structural Rise of RWA Commodity Perpetuals (Commodity Perps) Crude oil perpetual trading reaching levels comparable to BTC and ETH is not merely a byproduct of geopolitical sentiment. It is the result of three conditions: 24/7 operation, USDC collateral, and permissionless market creation. This has manifested as a structural need to fill the weekend and nighttime gaps of existing CME/NYMEX markets. Implications for business development include: - Expansion in demand for oracles and data feed services (e.g., RedStone, Pyth). - B2B infrastructure models for builder-type DEXs (white-label perpetuals). - DeFi connectivity gateways for macro hedge funds (institutional on-ramps). 3. Acceleration of CEX Market Consolidation The oligopoly of Binance (37%) and MEXC (10%) is strengthening, while even the top 10 exchanges face hardships with trading volumes down between 23% and 55%. As seen in the sharp decline of HTX (4.9% share), mid-tier CEXs are forced to reconstruct their revenue models. For Japanese financial institutions and exchanges, the realistic solution is to shift focus toward: (1) prime brokerage for institutional investors, (2) becoming distribution hubs for ETF/trust products, and (3) providing yield through staking and lending. 4. DEX Competitive Landscape: Solana vs. Ethereum While Solana maintained the top spot in DEX spot trading volume by chain with a 30.6% share, it is important to note that Ethereum briefly overtook it in March. The Ethereum ecosystem is making a comeback through Layer 2s, intent-based trading, and cross-chain bridging—factors that should influence the prioritization of developer ecosystem investment. 5. Product Design Captured by "Bear Market Capital Rotation" Three facts coexist: capital remains on-chain despite price drops (stablecoins flat), demand for volatility trading is expanding (commodity perps), and institutional demand persists (ETFs and tokenization). Businesses that succeed in this environment are not those dependent on "speculative trading," but rather "infrastructure-fee-based" models (fees, bridges, data, custody). A bear market should be viewed as an opportunity for investment in B2B foundations.
