The Closure of Foundation and the Current State of the NFT Business Landscape

Foundation(NFTマーケットプレイス)の閉鎖とNFT関連ビジネスの現在地
Foundation, an invite-only NFT marketplace on the Ethereum blockchain, announced the cessation of its operations on April 15, 2026. The announcement was made by co-founder and CEO Kayvon Tehranian on X (formerly Twitter). The direct cause was the collapse of an acquisition plan by digital art display company Blackdove, which rendered continued operations unsustainable. Blackdove had announced the acquisition on January 27, 2026, but following due diligence after the operational handover, the company withdrew, concluding that *"strategically, it is more aligned to build a marketplace from scratch in-house."* Since its establishment in February 2021, Foundation was a leading NFT infrastructure, recording cumulative primary sales of approximately $230 million (roughly ¥36.6 billion). Notable transactions included Chris Torres's *Nyan Cat*, which sold for approximately $567,360, and Edward Snowden's *Stay Free*, which was auctioned for 2,224 ETH (equivalent to approximately $5 million at the time). As NFTs are based on non-custodial contracts, they will remain on-chain; however, the front-end will cease to function, and IPFS media pinning will be maintained for one year only. This closure symbolizes a definitive phase in the market contraction that has continued since the NFT bubble of 2021. As of February 2026, the total market capitalization of the NFT market has returned to early 2021 pre-bubble levels, with OpenSea holding an oligopolistic market share of over 73% according to DefiLlama metrics. Approximately 96% of NFT collections see zero trading volume, and the total market cap decreased by 72% throughout 2025. Following Nifty Gateway, which was acquired by Gemini in 2019 (ended in January 2026), other platforms such as MakersPlace, KnownOrigin, RTFKT, and Rodeo have also withdrawn. Within the traditional art market, Christie's closed its digital art department, and Sotheby's had already scaled back its metaverse-related team in 2024. Blackdove executive Marc Billings emphasized: *"This decision does not correlate with the demand for digital art. Physical digital art installations have grown 40% year-on-year."* This clearly highlights the divergence between "speculative NFT trading" and "experiential/display-based digital art." ## Business Development Insights ## ## 1. The Rebirth of NFTs: From Marketplace to Infrastructure While companies primarily focused on "venues for NFT trading" have withdrawn, the demand itself has shifted rather than disappeared. The future path to success lies not in the "transaction fee business," but in: - Display & Spatial Experiences: Digital art installation SaaS for residential, office, and hospitality sectors. - Archival Assurance: Permanent storage (IPFS/Arweave) and proof-of-ownership services. - Integrated Solutions: Convergence of art, real estate, and brand experiences. - *For Japanese companies:* B2B digital art experience packages in partnership with hotels, commercial facilities, and galleries represent a promising new market. ## ## 2. Polarization: Vertical Integration vs. Long-tail Support In a market dominated by OpenSea, future opportunities lie at two extremes: - Vertically Integrated Type: Specializing in specific themes (Japanese contemporary art, anime IP, fashion brands) and handling everything from issuance to community management in-house. Japanese IP holders (publishers, anime committees) hold the source of market power and can break away from platform dependency. - Long-tail Support Type: "SaaS for artists" that supports individual minting and collector management (an art version of *Shopify*). With Foundation closed, over 1,000 artists are reportedly seeking new destinations. ## ## 3. The Permanence Gap: Blockchain vs. Corporations The risk of NFTs becoming inaccessible when a front-end disappears (despite being "on-chain") has surfaced as a serious purchaser protection issue. Implications for business development include: - Data Permanence Services: BPO-style management of decentralized storage contracts for enterprises. - Concierge Services: Wallet and portfolio preservation for high-value collectors. - Exit Plan Consulting: Designing customer protection obligations after the conclusion of brand NFT campaigns. ## ## Implications for the Japanese Market It is increasingly important for domestic platforms (e.g., *Rakuten NFT*, *LINE NEXT*) to have designs predicated on "user preservation at the time of termination" from both regulatory and brand protection standpoints. Conversely, there is significant room for highly reliable Japanese financial institutions and trust companies to enter this domain as credible custodians of digital ownership.
