State-Level Attack Exposes DeFi's Design-Philosophy Bug — Kelp DAO Loses $292M, North Korean Lazarus Implicated, $13B in TVL Vanishes in 48 Hours

国家規模の攻撃が露呈させたDeFiの「設計思想バグ」── Kelp DAO 4.5億ドル流出、北朝鮮ラザルス関与で2兆円TVLが2日で蒸発
#### The Core Incident — An Off-Chain Verification-Layer Attack At 17:35 UTC on April 18, 2026, Kelp DAO — an Ethereum-based liquid restaking protocol that issues rsETH against ETH routed through EigenLayer — saw 116,500 rsETH (approximately $292 million / ¥45 billion) drained from its LayerZero-powered cross-chain bridge. The amount represents roughly 18% of rsETH circulating supply, making it the largest DeFi hack of 2026. This was not a smart contract vulnerability. The attackers (1) gained access to the RPC node list used by LayerZero Labs' DVN, swapping op-geth binaries on two internal nodes with malicious versions, (2) launched DDoS attacks against the remaining external RPCs to force failover onto the poisoned nodes, and (3) implemented selective deception — the malicious nodes lied only to the DVN while continuing to return correct data to all other IP addresses including monitoring infrastructure. The Ethereum-side contract released rsETH despite no corresponding burn ever occurring upstream. #### Lazarus Group's "TraderTraitor" — Over $575M in 18 Days On April 20, LayerZero attributed the attack with high preliminary confidence to North Korea's Lazarus Group, specifically TraderTraitor. Just 18 days earlier, the same group hit Solana-based Drift Protocol for over $270 million, bringing the total stolen across both incidents to over $575 million (approximately ¥89 billion) — through structurally distinct vectors (governance signer social engineering at Drift, infrastructure RPC poisoning at Kelp). Safe Ecosystem Foundation chairman Lukas Schor warned that AI-driven social engineering is accelerating attack tempo, and DeFi faces nation-state-level adversaries with antiquated defenses. #### Finger-Pointing and Industry Contagion LayerZero asserts that "Kelp adopted a 1/1 DVN configuration despite explicit recommendations against it." Kelp counters: "The 1-of-1 DVN setup is the configuration documented in LayerZero's documentation and shipped as the default for any new OFT deployment" — and that during Kelp's L2 expansion, LayerZero "affirmatively confirmed" the default as appropriate. According to CoinDesk reporting, 40% of LayerZero protocols still run identical 1/1 configurations. Aave modeled two bad-debt scenarios (up to $230.1 million) and froze rsETH markets; SparkLend, Fluid, and at least nine other platforms were impacted. DeFi TVL fell by approximately $13 billion in 48 hours to $85.64 billion, the lowest level in roughly a year. Curve founder Michael Egorov diagnosed "centralized single point of failure," while Lido DAO proposed contributing up to 2,500 stETH to a coordinated rescue. #### Wall Street Skepticism and a Structural Operations Gap Jefferies analyst Andrew Moss noted the incident may slow Wall Street's pace on blockchain and tokenization initiatives. CertiK analyst Wenzhao Dong stated that "many DeFi teams still treat security as overhead — a non-revenue-generating cost." Oasys Director Ryo Manzoku flagged that off-chain layers like RPCs, key management, and binary integrity lack any industry standard. Security headcount per dollar of TVL has been declining — operational maturity is failing to keep pace with architectural sophistication. ### [Business Development Insights] 1. gained access to the RPC node list used by LayerZero Labs' DVN 2. launched DDoS attacks against the remaining external RPCs to force failover onto the poisoned nodes 3. implemented selective deception — the malicious nodes lied only to the DVN while continuing to return correct data to all other IP addresses including monitoring infrastructure Sources: CoinPost (April 22, 2026); LayerZero, *KelpDAO Incident Statement* (April 20, 2026); CoinDesk, *LayerZero blames Kelp's setup* and *Kelp DAO claims LayerZero's default settings* (April 20, 2026); The Block, *Kelp DAO shifts blame to LayerZero* (April 21, 2026); Chainalysis, *Inside the KelpDAO Bridge Exploit* (April 23, 2026); SecurityWeek (April 21, 2026); DEXTools News; Sherwood News; CryptoTimes (April 20, 2026); Aave Bad Debt Scenario Report (April 2026); Ryo Manzoku (Oasys) X post; CoinPost related coverage, *JPMorgan concerned about institutional DeFi adoption* (April 24, 2026).
