A New Shield for National Security: U.S. Military Node Operations and "Power Projection" via Bitcoin

国家安全保障の新たな盾:米軍によるビットコイン・ノード運営と「力の投射」
1. Purpose of Military Use: "Computer Science," Not Finance During a House Armed Services Committee hearing, Admiral Paparo responded to questioning from Congressman Lance Gooden by stating, "Presently, we have a node on the Bitcoin network right now." Critically, the military's objective is not speculation or profit via mining, but rather "network monitoring" and "operational tests to secure and protect networks using the Bitcoin protocol." The Admiral evaluates Bitcoin as a computer science tool that uniquely combines cryptography, blockchain, and Proof of Work (PoW). 2. "Power Projection" and Cyber Defense Applications Admiral Paparo highlighted that Bitcoin’s PoW protocol "actually imposes more costs than just the algorithmic securing of networks," requiring physical energy to manipulate. He views this as a "zero-trust" value transfer mechanism that can be applied to defend military communication networks and establish technical superiority against adversaries. Particularly in the Indo-Pacific—the stage for intense strategic competition with China—utilizing decentralized, censorship-resistant infrastructure is positioned as a "new projection of power" to enhance communication robustness. 3. Bitcoin as a Strategic National Resource The hearing also cited data from the Bitcoin Policy Institute (BPI), noting that while China holds an estimated 194,000 BTC, the U.S. holds approximately 328,000 BTC (primarily seized assets). The Admiral agreed that in an era of digital competition, maintaining superiority in Bitcoin technology and assets holds strategic advantages similar to gold or oil. This symbolizes Bitcoin’s transition from a "private freelance currency" to a primary battlefield in the "tech-hegemony struggle" between nations. ## Business Development Insights 1. Developing tactical strategies around blockchain technology for military applications 2. Enhancing cybersecurity measures by leveraging Bitcoin's decentralized network 3. Conducting research on the implications of blockchain for national security Sources: - CoinPost: U.S. Military Operates Bitcoin Nodes for Surveillance and Defense - U.S. House Armed Services Committee Hearing (April 22, 2026): Testimony of Adm.
