Built-in Privacy Arrives on the OP Stack — Privacy Boost as the Final Missing Piece for Institutional On-Chain Migration

OP Stackに到来した「組み込み型プライバシー」――Privacy Boostが映す、機関投資家オンチェーン移行の最終ピース
#### Built-in Privacy Comes to the OP Stack On April 20, 2026, Sunnyside Labs — a core OP Stack developer — launched Privacy Boost on OP Mainnet. The drop-in SDK adds confidential token transfers, private smart contract logic, and compliance-compatible architecture to any existing OP Stack chain without rebuilding. Its hybrid ZK plus TEE design achieves sub-500ms proof generation and high throughput, with a security audit completed by OpenZeppelin and a forced-withdrawal mechanism that guarantees self-custody at the protocol level. #### Why Privacy Concerns Have Risen So Sharply Now The driver is the privacy wall blocking institutional on-chain migration. In a Sunnyside survey of the OP community, built-in privacy ranked first at 30.4% as the most important requirement for scaling on-chain payments — ahead of faster finality, lower fees, and better UX. Paul Brody, EY's global blockchain leader, has noted that large enterprises consider counterparty and pricing data highly sensitive, and transparent ledgers make such information trivially reverse-engineerable. Market data confirms the shift. In 2025, Zcash (ZEC) rose roughly 820% and Monero around 130%, sharply outperforming both BTC and ETH. Grayscale's 2026 Digital Asset Outlook frames the coming year as the "institutional era," with privacy infrastructure positioned as the bridge between traditional finance and public blockchains. #### Leading Privacy Solution Implementations Aztec Network launched its Ignition Chain in November 2025 as the first decentralized privacy L2 on Ethereum, offering programmable privacy through its Noir DSL. Canton Network was selected by DTCC, which clears the bulk of US securities transactions, as the partner for tokenizing DTC-custodied US Treasuries with an MVP targeted for the first half of 2026 — backed by Goldman Sachs, BNY Mellon, BlackRock, and others. Starknet activated its Shinobi upgrade (v0.14.2) on April 20, 2026, introducing native protocol-level privacy via SNIP-36, plus the STRK20 confidential ERC-20 framework and strkBTC for shielded Bitcoin in DeFi. Circle partnered with Aleo to deploy USDCx, a USDC-backed privacy-preserving stablecoin on Aleo Testnet, designed for global payroll, vendor payments, and aid distribution with configurable compliance. The Ethereum Foundation launched a 47-member Privacy Cluster led by Igor Barinov in October 2025, alongside Vitalik Buterin's Kohaku Wallet SDK aimed at making strong cryptography usable by default. #### Why Privacy Is Now a Non-Negotiable Requirement Public blockchains expose all activity by design — meaning enterprises broadcast treasury movements, counterparties, and pricing strategies to competitors. Consumer apps cannot ship products where user balances and transaction histories are visible. The US Treasury's March 2025 delisting of Tornado Cash, following the Fifth Circuit's ruling that immutable smart contracts do not constitute "property" under IEEPA, marked the regulatory limits of code-targeted enforcement. At the same time, MiCA in the EU and BSA in the US remain mandatory frameworks. The industry direction is therefore programmable privacy — protecting customer data from public exposure while preserving authorized oversight. The TRM Labs integration in Privacy Boost, and the viewing-key models adopted by Starknet and Aleo, are concrete expressions of this principle. ### [Business Development Insights] 1. Privacy has been elevated from a feature to infrastructure-level requirement The 30.4% figure shows that privacy now outranks UX and gas costs as the top requirement. Evaluating new L2/L1 platforms by throughput and fees alone is no longer sufficient. The presence of privacy primitives, the granularity of selective disclosure, and regulatory readiness must all become primary axes. Enterprise RFPs will increasingly require detailed specifications around ZK/TEE composition, audit granularity, and forced-withdrawal mechanisms. 2. The "drop-in" go-to-market strategy accelerates developer adoption Privacy Boost ships as an SDK that integrates without major changes to existing OP Stack chains. This shows that bolting onto established ecosystems beats greenfield chain construction for commercial traction. For Japanese enterprises entering blockchain, the pragmatic path is a hybrid stack — Canton for institutional finance, OP Stack plus Privacy Boost for general enterprise applications, and Aleo for privacy-native use cases — rather than building bespoke chains. 3. "Compliance-compatible privacy" is a critical differentiator for the Japanese market The Tornado Cash delisting marks a regulatory inflection point, but sanctions screening, AML/KYC, and tax audit capabilities remain mandatory. With Japan's 2026 Cabinet decision on amending the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act to treat crypto as financial products, B2B use cases — payroll, vendor settlement, treasury management via private stablecoins (the USDCx model), and institutional RWA tokenization (the Canton model) — align particularly well with Japan's regulatory posture. Designing privacy and auditability together from day one is now a prerequisite for winning financial-institution and listed-company deals. ### References - neweconomy.jp "Sunnyside Labs and OP Labs Release 'Privacy Boost' for OP Stack" (April 24, 2026) - Optimism Official Blog "Privacy Comes to the OP Stack" (April 20, 2026) - The Block "From Aztec to Zcash: The year 'pragmatic privacy' took root" (December 2025) - insights4vc "Privacy Trends for 2026" (January 2026) - CoinDesk "Wall Street giant DTCC Picks privacy focused blockchain Canton Network" (December 17, 2025) - Decrypt "Ethereum Foundation Launches New Cluster Focused on Privacy" (October 2025) - The Block "Vitalik Buterin unveils Kohaku" (November 2025) - AMBCrypto "Ethereum's 2026 roadmap puts institutional privacy front and center" (January 2026) - Fortune "Circle stablecoin for 'banking-level privacy' to launch on Aleo blockchain" (December 9, 2025) - Circle Blog "USDCx on Aleo Testnet via Circle xReserve" (December 2025) - Starknet Official Blog "strkBTC: Starknet's Shielded Bitcoin" (February 2026) - U.S. Department of the Treasury "Tornado Cash Delisting" (March 21, 2025) - Invezz / MEXC "Zcash exploded this year: 2 privacy coins to watch in 2026" (January 2026) - TRM Labs Blog "DTCC, Canton, and the Next Phase of Tokenized Market Infrastructure" (December 2025)
