Sunnyside Labs' "Privacy Boost" Opens a New Era of Enterprise On-Chain Privacy ― ZK + TEE Hybrid Architecture and the Latest Adoption Landscape

1. The Core Design: Why "ZK + TEE"?
Privacy Boost is an enterprise-grade privacy SDK developed by Sunnyside Labs, an OP Stack core contributor and a major Ethereum contributor. Its defining feature is a hybrid architecture combining ZK (zero-knowledge) proofs with TEEs (Trusted Execution Environments). The TEE operated by Sunnyside compensates for the slow proof generation and high gas costs of pure ZK solutions, while ZK proofs mathematically guarantee verifiability and soundness — a two-layer defense.
Technically, Privacy Boost adopts a UTXO model. Deposited assets are converted into "private notes" (commitments via Poseidon hashes) and managed in append-only Merkle trees. Transactions are signed with an EdDSA secret key and generate a nullifier to prevent double-spending. A TEE-operated relay batches transactions per epoch, with on-chain Groth16 verification. Transfer details are encrypted via a 3-way ECDH scheme, decryptable only by the TEE and the recipient. Even if TEE infrastructure were compromised, fund authority remains with users via their EdDSA keys, with a Forced Withdrawal mechanism providing censorship resistance. OpenZeppelin has completed a smart contract audit.
2. Executive Takeaways: Privacy and Compliance, Combined
From a strategic perspective, three values stand out. First, strict self-custody — Sunnyside itself cannot view customer transaction data, eliminating custody risk. Second, selective disclosure (Audit View) — only operators or auditors holding designated audit view keys can review transaction details, designed for EU MiCA and U.S. BSA (Bank Secrecy Act) compliance. Sanctions screening is built in via TRM Labs integration. Third, a drop-in SDK approach — no chain migration or infrastructure rebuild required. The SDK can be retrofitted onto any OP Stack chain, with libraries for TypeScript, React, iOS, Android, and Rust. Standard ECDSA-based wallets such as MetaMask work out of the box. Sunnyside reports that production-grade PoCs typically complete in two weeks.
3. Adoption Status: Latest Chain Deployments
① OP Mainnet (Optimism): On April 21, 2026, Privacy Boost went live on OP Mainnet — the first official privacy offering on the OP Stack from a core developer. It supports confidential token transfers, private smart contract logic, and a compliance-compatible architecture.
② Soneium: On April 28, 2026, the Ethereum L2 "Soneium" — co-developed by Sony Block Solutions Labs and Startale — was announced as the second supported chain. Startale Group (which closed a $63 million Series A in March 2026, including $50 million from SBI Group and $13 million from Sony Innovation Fund) selected Privacy Boost as the official privacy partner for its consumer-facing Startale App. Integration via SDK will enable asset shielding, private P2P transfers, and privacy-preserving payment flows tied to future crypto card functionality. This is Privacy Boost's first integration into a consumer application.
③ Outlook: Optimism has publicly stated expansion to additional blockchains "in the coming weeks," signaling broader propagation across the Superchain ecosystem (over 50 OP Stack chains). The SDK is officially available "to Sunnyside customers on any OP Stack chain," meaning adoption will scale through enterprise contracts.
[Business Development Insights]
- "Compliance-Native Privacy" Is the Next Battlefield: Unlike fully anonymous systems such as Zcash or Tornado Cash, Privacy Boost embeds selective disclosure, simultaneously solving the two largest barriers to enterprise public-chain adoption: exposure of treasury and trade strategies, and AML/KYT compliance. Default MiCA and BSA alignment carries strong implications for Japanese crypto-asset exchange operators and electronic-payment-instrument businesses operating under the Payment Services Act and Travel Rule.
- The Strategic Significance of "Sony × SBI × Startale" — A Japan-Originated Enterprise Implementation: It is no coincidence that Privacy Boost's second adopting chain emerged from a Japanese corporate alliance. For Startale — which positions Soneium as the issuance platform for JPYSC (a JPY stablecoin slated for Q2 2026) and USDSC — auditable privacy is a business prerequisite. This stack is poised to become the reference architecture for Japanese enterprises deploying institutional workflows on public chains.
- A "Drop-In SDK" Reshapes Go-to-Market Strategy: A two-week production PoC fundamentally changes the velocity of enterprise procurement decisions. Retrofitting privacy onto any OP Stack application without building a new chain provides a new template for SaaS-style B2B Web3 infrastructure. For Japanese Web3 operators, partnering with Sunnyside — rather than building a proprietary privacy stack — becomes a viable accelerator for payment, RWA, and remittance products.
