Sui Halts Three Times in 48 Hours — A High-Speed L1 Confronts the Limits of Validator Operations and Upgrade Design

Sui、48時間で3度の停止──「高速L1」が突きつけられたバリデーター運用とアップグレード設計の課題

■ A chain of three halts

The first outage, on May 28, was caused by a crash bug in the gas-charging logic introduced in v1.72, halting block production for roughly six hours (reports range from 5h55m to 6h44m). During consensus commit, more than one-third of stake signed a different block digest, making certification impossible. Node operators purged the incorrect consensus data, and once over two-thirds of stake completed an emergency upgrade, the network recovered. Yet within 24 hours, a second major disruption struck on May 29. The May 28–29 halts stemmed from interactions between features in v1.72 — which introduced address balances and gas-charging changes — and existing layers. The May 29 fix was an interim measure that contained a known defect.

■ Failure at the epoch transition

The May 30 halt occurred while deploying the long-term version of that interim fix. When validators restarted to roll out the new binary, the randomness initialization run at each epoch start could not complete because it required a higher quorum threshold than Sui’s consensus; a latent bug then persisted that failure state across restarts, preventing the transition to the next epoch. Validators were operational and generating system transactions, but user transactions were not being accepted. The network resumed after a fix, with a detailed incident review promised.

■ Market and context

Amid the turmoil, SUI fell to around $0.90, down roughly 19% on the week, and the latest halt alone liquidated about $1.88 million in positions. Sui is an object-centric L1 built by Mysten Labs (former Meta engineers); in February 2026, Canary (SUIS) and Grayscale (GSUI) had just listed spot ETFs carrying ~7% staking rewards. Following outages in November 2024 and January 2026, this is the third major disruption of the year, spotlighting the gap between institutional inflows and operational stability.

##[Business Development Insights]

  1. The faster an L1 markets itself, the more the interaction between new features (balance design, gasless transfers) and existing consensus layers becomes a source of risk. For node/validator businesses, canary deployment, phased rollout, and instant-rollback design are themselves both differentiators and billable value.
  2. Consecutive halts right after institutional capital arrives via ETFs are judged by regulated allocators not as price volatility but as operational risk. Availability SLAs, the speed and transparency of incident disclosure, and documented recovery procedures are becoming must-haves for institution-facing infrastructure providers.
  3. The fact that recovery consistently depends on “coordinated emergency upgrades by validators” illustrates the trade-off between decentralization and operational control. Packaged “managed validation” — third-party validator operation, monitoring, and emergency response — is a domain whose demand grows as L1 reliability issues surface.
