$150 Million of $900 Million: Decomposing the Numbers at Robinhood Chain

Decomposing the numbers
According to DefiLlama, total value locked on Robinhood Chain stood at roughly $900 million on September 11, near an all-time high. Decentralised exchange volume over the previous seven days reached about $11.1 billion, up more than 30% week on week. On September 1, daily fees hit a record $3.75 million — a fourth consecutive all-time high — surpassing both Ethereum mainnet and Base. Cumulative fees have passed $13 million in the two months since mainnet launched on July 1.
The network is an Ethereum Layer 2 built on Arbitrum's Orbit stack, running 100-millisecond block times and settling to Ethereum. It was designed to carry more than 190 stock tokens for eligible investors across over 120 countries.
The composition tells a different story. Robinhood disclosed on X on September 9 that assets held in equity tokens amount to $150 million, roughly 17% of total value locked. The volume breakdown is starker still: on September 2, when 24-hour DEX volume set a record at $1.545 billion, tokenized stocks accounted for $127 million and memecoin-to-stock-token pairs for $217 million. Together that is just over a fifth; the remaining four-fifths is pure speculation.
The fee record has an expiry date
What is easily missed is that these figures are subsidised. Robinhood covers gas costs for transactions made through its own wallet, making trading effectively free for users. That arrangement is set to end on September 29.
Following the economics clarifies the implication. Robinhood operates the sequencer and retains what remains after Layer 1 settlement costs and its distribution to Arbitrum. Under the Arbitrum Expansion Program, Orbit chains remit 10% of net sequencer revenue to Arbitrum, split 8% to the DAO treasury and 2% to the Developer Guild. On the record day, roughly $377,000 flowed through that channel, against fees of under $15,000 generated by Arbitrum itself the same day.
For the subsidised portion, however, gas paid by Robinhood is recorded as fee revenue and most of it returns to Robinhood. What it actually loses is the Layer 1 data cost and Arbitrum's 10% — meaning that portion is a customer acquisition expense being recorded as revenue on a third-party dashboard. The share of fees Robinhood bears itself is not disclosed, so the proportion is unknown, but the figures after September 29 will answer the question directly. One benchmark under discussion is whether daily transfers to the Arbitrum DAO hold above $100,000 post-subsidy, which corresponds to roughly $1 million in daily chain fees, about a quarter of the peak.
Two incidents exposed the consent vacuum
Two episodes in early September revealed the structural weakness in the stock-token product.
The first involves Farmmi. On September 2, shares in this Nasdaq-listed company — roughly 15 employees, about 37.43 million shares outstanding — rose as much as 350% intraday to $0.50. Volume exceeded 720 million shares, close to 90 times normal. The company announced nothing. The trigger was JINQIAN, a memecoin launched on Robinhood Chain, paired against an unofficial token borrowing Farmmi's ticker. That FAMI token was independently deployed: its entire supply of roughly 37 million units was minted in a single transaction to two wallets, the deployer retained 38%, and the same party controlled a contract that repriced the liquidity pools. No exchange mechanism with the underlying shares exists. Buying the token could not generate any purchase of real shares, yet the regulated market moved anyway. What propagated was not capital but narrative.
The second is AMC. Robinhood's stock tokens are tokenized debt securities issued by Robinhood Assets (Jersey) Limited, a Channel Islands entity, backed one-to-one by underlying shares. They are unregistered under US securities law and not intended for US persons. On September 3, AMC chief executive Adam Aron protested sharply on discovering his company was among more than 190 tokenized without consent, demanding a halt and signalling a referral to the SEC. Robinhood chief executive Vlad Tenev responded by asking what the concern was, and took the position that public companies cannot control the financial products built around their shares. SEC staff acknowledged in January 2026 that securities can be tokenized by third parties unaffiliated with the issuer, which is the legal footing Robinhood stands on.
The most consequential point receives the least attention: where the votes sit. Robinhood holds the underlying shares as backing and therefore holds the voting rights. Token holders have none. Tenev said the company has not announced how it plans to exercise them. Voting power across more than 190 US listed companies is accumulating in one firm without disclosure of how it will be used.
Winning attention, not share
Robinhood is not, in fact, the leader in tokenized equities. The Block reports Ondo Finance largest by market capitalisation at roughly $957 million, followed by Binance's bStocks at about $622 million and Kraken's xStocks at about $600 million — three firms holding roughly 77% of a market sized at around $3.6 billion. On September 10, Pump.fun on Solana announced the ability to select equity tokens such as Tesla and Nvidia as trading pairs, and the contest for control is beginning in earnest.
Japan's regulatory environment differs. Its framework for electronically recorded transferable rights presupposes issuer involvement and disclosure, so the Robinhood model — an offshore entity structuring debt securities without issuer participation — cannot be replicated domestically as it stands. That is a constraint, but it also structurally avoids the very disputes now erupting in the United States.
[Business Development Insights]
- Judge a chain by the share of activity serving its stated purpose, not by total value locked or fees. Robinhood Chain directs roughly 17% of assets and about 8% of record-day volume to equity tokens. Firms considering their own chain or a consortium platform should build a purpose-asset ratio into their KPIs; aggregate growth is not evidence that the purpose is being served.
- Subsidised metrics have maturity dates. The September 29 expiry functions as an externally observable stress test. When launching infrastructure or applications, set the end date of acquisition incentives in advance and design board reporting around how metrics move on either side of it. When evaluating partners, whether their figures carry a subsidy belongs at the top of the diligence checklist.
- Issuer consent and the location of voting rights are the first fork in the road for anyone building tokenized equity products in Japan. Deciding at the specification stage how votes attached to backing shares will be handled, alongside a process for obtaining issuer consent, is both a compliance measure and a differentiator that sidesteps the exposures the US model now carries.
