Pudgy Penguins' Ethereum L2 "Abstract" to Shut Down on December 15: Exiting Without a Token, and Who Carries the Migration Burden When a Chain Closes

Pudgy Penguins運営のイーサリアムL2「Abstract」が12月15日に停止へ トークンを発行しない撤退判断と、チェーンの終了で移行の責任を負うのは誰か

The announcement and the shutdown timeline

Abstract announced on X on October 6, 2026 (US time; October 7 JST) that it will shut down on December 15, 2026. Assets that users have not bridged off the network by then will become inaccessible. The official exit routes are the Migration Hub, the native bridge (about a three-hour delay) and the third-party bridges Stargate, Relay and Jumper. Abstract also warned users about fake migration sites and DMs from people impersonating the team. Mainnet launched in January 2025, so the chain will have run for less than two years.

Why Abstract is closing, and why there is no token

The team said a chain focused only on consumer crypto has proven unsustainable as a standalone business. It gave four reasons: a limited DeFi ecosystem, thin liquidity, little institutional participation, and a smaller budget than competing chains. Netz said Igloo funded Abstract for about 18 months and lost "tens of millions of dollars" over two years, or several billion yen at roughly JPY158 per dollar. Igloo considered launching a token or running an ICO but rejected both, saying a token without real demand behind it would not fix the problem. Igloo will now focus on the Pudgy Penguins IP, its NFTs and the PENGU token. In July 2024, Igloo raised more than $11 million (about JPY1.7 billion), led by Founders Fund, to build Abstract.

The reported figures conflict

Outlets give figures that measure different things. The Block and Atarashii Keizai report more than 144 deployed apps and more than 400,000 onboarded users. BlockchainGamerBiz reports more than 325 million transactions, about 4 million wallets created, and more than $40 million (about JPY6.3 billion) in revenue earned by businesses on the network. The 4 million figure counts wallets and the 400,000 figure counts users, so they are not interchangeable. Estimates of the assets still on the chain vary even more. Unchained cites L2BEAT data for roughly $47 million (about JPY7.4 billion) just before the announcement. CoinCentral cites DefiLlama's bridged-value metric for about $76 million (about JPY12 billion). By October 9, L2BEAT showed about $30.17 million (about JPY4.8 billion) in total value secured (TVS), the total value of assets the chain secures, which suggests funds are already leaving.

Technical profile and migration risk

According to L2BEAT, Abstract is a ZK rollup built on ZKsync's ZK Stack and part of the Elastic Network, and it posts data to Ethereum as blobs. L2BEAT rates it Stage 0, its lowest maturity level. Only whitelisted proposers can post state to Ethereum, emergency upgrades have no exit window, and the operator can still censor withdrawals. So although Abstract is a rollup, there is no clearly stated guarantee that users can withdraw directly from Ethereum (L1) on their own after shutdown. This is the key difference from Blast, which says users can still withdraw through its L1 bridge contracts after its deadline, while Abstract says leftover funds will become "inaccessible." The Migration Hub's section for NFT and app-specific instructions is still empty. Reported affected games include Pudgy Party, Gigaverse and Cambria, and some have reportedly announced moves to Robinhood Chain.

Why chains are closing now

On October 2, Blast, which is backed by Paradigm, announced its own shutdown, saying operating costs exceeded revenue. Its deadline for withdrawals through the standard interface is October 26. Kinto wound down in 2025, and in September 2026 Harmony announced it will retire its L1. Chains that attracted transactions but cannot cover their fixed costs from sequencer revenue are now being shut down.

[Business Development Insights]

  1. Game and IP companies deciding whether to build their own chain should ask one question: is the chain worth its fixed costs as a way to stand out? Abstract had more than 400,000 users, and more than $40 million in revenue for businesses on the network, yet it still drained money from Igloo's core business. A strong IP audience does not by itself make a chain profitable. Companies should compare building their own chain against running as an app on an existing general-purpose L2, or using a shared sequencer, from the start.
  2. A company that launches a chain should also plan how the chain would close. The terms of service and the smart contracts should both set out a shutdown date, a way for users to withdraw directly on L1, where NFT metadata and assets are stored, and the rules for reissuing assets on a new chain. User protections on a Stage 0 rollup weaken once the operator leaves. For Japanese companies whose domestic users hold assets, how a chain closes is likely to become a consumer-protection issue.
  3. Exiting without launching a token is a credible way to protect the core IP brand. After the announcement, the Pudgy Penguins NFT floor price rose and PENGU fell 4 to 6% (BeInCrypto, Odaily). The market read the separation from the chain as good for the IP business. IP companies should decide in advance what would trigger dropping an infrastructure venture once it starts hurting the core brand.
