NFT Pioneer OpenSea Becomes an "Everything Trading App" — NFTs Shift From a Standalone Market to One Asset in a Portfolio

What the app does
OpenSea Mobile lets users sign up with just an email address — no seed phrase, browser extension or existing wallet is needed. The wallet is non-custodial, meaning users control their own assets, and it can be funded with Apple Pay or Google Pay. Existing wallets can be imported via QR code or private key. A portfolio view shows tokens and NFTs across all chains, and users can trade across chains without manually bridging assets.
Social trading as the headline feature
The centerpiece is social trading. Trades by followed accounts appear in a real-time feed, including trades made in other crypto apps such as FOMO, Pump and Farcaster. A "Signals" feature lets users post a short note explaining why they bought something. Fees are 0.5% per token trade and 1% per collectible purchase; referred users get a 10% discount, and referrers receive 25% of those users' fees.
Behind it: a shrinking NFT market
The shift cannot be separated from the NFT downturn. Nifty Gateway (February) and Foundation (April) closed in 2026, and Blur — once larger than OpenSea by trading volume — announced on October 13 that it will shut its trading site on November 12. Blast, the Ethereum layer-2 network launched by Blur's founder, will go offline on October 26. OpenSea itself reportedly drew more than 90% of its October 2025 trading volume from non-NFT crypto trades and has been pivoting from an NFT-only venue to a multi-chain trading app. Meanwhile, the launch of its SEA token was postponed in March 2026 with no new date.
The competitive picture
Around the same time, Pump.fun, known for meme-coin launches and trading, added trading-card pack sales to its own app. Companies that started from NFTs and companies that started from meme coins are now competing for the same "everything app" position. NFTs are increasingly treated as one asset among many in a user's portfolio.
A note on the launch date
OpenSea's official blog dated the public launch October 20, as did most international media, while some outlets reported it on October 21 — likely due to time zones and reporting timing.
[Business Development Insights]
- NFTs are shifting from "products sold on a dedicated marketplace" to "one asset in an all-in-one app's portfolio." NFT issuers should focus less on building their own storefronts and more on which apps and trading networks carry their NFTs, and on designs that still deliver holder value — such as perks or redemption — wherever the NFT sits.
- Email sign-up, non-custodial wallets and funding via mobile payment apps are now the standard consumer Web3 experience. Japanese operators of NFT, loyalty-point or stablecoin services will be compared against this UX, so the choice of wallet infrastructure will strongly affect user acquisition.
- Social trading, which lets users see and copy others' trades, could raise questions in Japan about where investment advice and solicitation begin under the Financial Instruments and Exchange Act. The fact that features common overseas cannot simply be imported is also room for differentiation for domestic operators that can design compliant trading experiences.
