Mitsui & Co. Digital Commodities to Expand Zipangcoin to Multi-Chain Architecture; Integrates OP Stack and Planned Solana Deployment

三井物産デジタルコモディティーズのジパングコイン、マルチチェーン(パブリックチェーン)展開へ。OP採用およびSolanaへの展開も予定
On April 17, 2026, Mitsui & Co. Digital Commodities, Ltd.—a wholly owned subsidiary of Mitsui & Co., Ltd.—announced the expansion of its precious metal-pegged crypto-asset, "Zipangcoin (ZPG)," onto public blockchain networks. While previously issued exclusively on "Miyabi," a private blockchain developed by bitFlyer Blockchain, the series will now launch on "OP Mainnet" (an Ethereum Layer 2), with plans to extend to the Solana (SOL) network. This dual-issuance model spanning private and public infrastructures marks a pivotal strategic shift. ## Rationale for Chain Selection - Optimism (OP): Selected for its architecture that inherits Ethereum’s robust security, its proven track record with major players (e.g., Coinbase’s Base, Sony’s Soneium), and its compatibility with regulated crypto-asset frameworks. - Solana: Highly evaluated for its high throughput, liquidity, and scalability, as well as its mature frameworks for on-chain ID and AML compliance. Mitsui also cited growing institutional adoption on Solana, including Visa’s stablecoin settlements and J.P. Morgan’s tokenized commercial paper. - Infrastructure: The issuance will utilize Fireblocks, a leading digital asset infrastructure provider. GMO Coin is scheduled to list the OP Mainnet-based ZPG series starting April 20 April 2026. ## Market Position: Scaling the First Japanese Gold-Backed Token Launched in February 2022, ZPG was Japan’s first gold-pegged stablecoin, designed such that 1 ZPG equals 1 gram of physical gold, fully backed by physical reserves. While global competitors like Tether Gold (XAUt) and Paxos Gold (PAXG) maintain market caps of approximately ¥91.2 billion and ¥67.7 billion respectively, ZPG has remained relatively small at 47,776 ZPG (approx. ¥500 million). The transition to public chains is expected to significantly enhance access for global DeFi protocols and individual investors. ## Business Development Insights ## 1. Competitive Advantage: The "Sogo Shosha" x RWA Model Mitsui’s strategy transcends mere token issuance; it establishes a unique Japanese model: "Commodity Supply Chain x Public Blockchain." Unlike financial issuers (Tether/Paxos), Mitsui controls the entire value chain—procurement, storage, and quality assurance of the physical underlying. - Strategic Implication: This creates a scalable platform for other commodities (platinum, silver, crude oil, rare metals). For Japan’s general trading companies (Mitsubishi, Itochu, etc.), digital commodity ventures could become a core RWA revenue stream, leveraging the "Japan Brand" of trust and auditability. ## ## 2. The Three-Tier Blueprint for Global RWA Deployment The architecture employed here serves as a template for global expansion: 1. Focus on regulatory compliance and governance structures 2. Leverage multi-chain deployments for increased liquidity 3. Engage in partnerships with traditional financial institutions - Strategic Implication: This "Institutional Foundation + Multi-Chain + Regulated Distribution" model mirrors the success of Circle (USDC) and Paxos. Issuers of JPY-stablecoins (JPYC, Progmat) will likely find it rational to adopt similar multi-chain strategies to capture DeFi liquidity. ## ## 3. Solana as the Institutional On-Ramp for Late 2026 The selection of Solana specifically for its "On-chain ID and AML frameworks" suggests that Solana is challenging Ethereum’s dominance in the institutional RWA space. - Strategic Implication: For institutions designing DeFi/RWA products, the default choice may shift from Ethereum L2 to Solana or a dual-strategy. Collaborations with on-chain ID and compliance startups will become a critical requirement. The "Licensed Issuer + Solana Ecosystem + Institutional Custody" triad will be the key to establishing a position in the global RWA market.
