From "Holding" to "Earning": gumi Redesigns Its Crypto Operations Around XRP Consolidation and Covered Calls

「保有」から「収益化」へ──gumiがXRP一本化とカバードコールで挑む暗号資産運用の再設計

The Yield Wall Facing a Staking-Dependent Model

Through its strategic subsidiary gC Labs, gumi has pursued returns via rebalancing, hedging, and staking of its crypto holdings. Its latest disclosure states plainly that a deteriorating crypto market has sharply lowered yields, leaving the current model structurally unable to secure sufficient income. This is not a company-specific issue: as of 2026, XRP-related yields on major exchanges sit at roughly 1–3% APY on flexible products—and under 1% in some cases—making it hard to build stable returns on staking and lending alone.

The strain is visible in gumi's P&L. For FY ended April 2026, revenue was ¥9.183 billion, but operating profit was a mere ¥83 million (down about 77% year on year). Ordinary profit of ¥2.17 billion and net income attributable to owners of ¥1.454 billion were underpinned by ¥2.63261 billion in crypto valuation gains. In short, profit leans not on the core business or operating yield, but on market-driven mark-to-market gains—the heart of the management challenge.

Why "XRP Consolidation" and "Covered Calls"

Notably, XRP itself has no native staking mechanism. The XRP Ledger uses its own consensus (RPCA), so merely holding XRP earns no on-network reward. That is precisely why gumi adopts a covered-call strategy: holding spot XRP while selling call options to collect premiums on an ongoing basis. In exchange for capping some upside, this creates a "cash-flow engine" that earns income even in flat or mildly declining markets—a pragmatic answer in a market where yield has vanished.

Concentrating on XRP rather than thinly managing many tokens also improves the efficiency of building option positions and running hedges. Group crypto holdings stood at roughly ¥14 billion (about US$90 million) at end-April 2026, and gumi will keep acquiring XRP while migrating its holdings accordingly.

Alignment with the SBI Ecosystem and the "Largest in Japan" Ambition

The XRP tilt reflects ties with major shareholder SBI Group, which is deeply embedded in the XRP economy—via SBI Ripple Asia (a joint venture with Ripple) and SBI Remit's cross-border transfers that use XRP as a bridge asset between fiat currencies. gumi's goal of becoming "Japan's largest XRP holder and operator" appears aimed not at speculation but at overlapping its position onto a partner's strategic asset to claim symbolic category leadership.

That said, the shares of Digital Asset Treasury (DAT) companies tend to swing even more than their holdings, and single-asset concentration amplifies price risk. Whether covered-call income can smooth that volatility will determine the strategy's success.

[Business Development Insights]

  1. The shift from "holding and managing" to "generating cash flow" is becoming a new axis of competition. Models that merely hold assets—or manage them thinly—grow obsolete fast when yields compress. Across any asset-based business, durability hinges on designing a "recurring, market-independent revenue engine" (such as option premiums or service income) rather than relying on mark-to-market gains dictated by price moves.
  2. Becoming a category leader through focus simultaneously boosts recognition and operational efficiency. Rather than diffusing across many areas, narrowing the target and clearly claiming "the largest" or "No.1" makes it easier to combine brand symbolism with operational efficiency (consolidated positions, hedging, and sourcing). In new ventures, redefining a narrower winnable arena is often the starting point for differentiation.
  3. Anchoring business decisions to a partner's ecosystem can turn speculation into strategy. By deliberately overlaying asset selection and strategic direction onto a strong partner's economy (customers, distribution, use cases), a company can give otherwise hard-to-justify decisions a narrative of inevitability and synergy—powerful support for fundraising and stakeholder persuasion alike.
