Square Enix x ENECHANGE Pick Oasys for a Decarbonization App: Using "Gamification x Blockchain" to Drive Behavior Change

スクエニ×エネチェンジ、脱炭素アプリにOasys採用——「ゲーミフィケーション×ブロックチェーン」で生活者の行動変容を狙う

What was announced

On June 29, Square Enix said it would co-develop a new consumer decarbonization service with ENECHANGE (listed on the TSE Growth Market, ticker 4169), with a launch planned within 2026. The project has been selected as a "gamification-based decarbonization lifestyle-shift promotion project" under a subsidy tied to the Ministry of the Environment's "Deco-katsu" national movement for low-carbon living. The venture pairs Square Enix's entertainment expertise with ENECHANGE's energy and decarbonization know-how and platform.

How it works: missions earn points; character-raising sustains engagement

Everyday decarbonization actions such as saving electricity and energy are set as "missions," and completing them earns points. The app includes a character-raising element within its own world, where points grow as the character levels up—designed to sustain ongoing use. Points are funded by advertising and corporate/organizational sponsorship, and are slated to be exchangeable for the kind of common loyalty points popular in Japan ("poi-katsu") and for in-app game items. Missions will be updated and expanded through partnerships with municipalities and companies working on decarbonization, also serving to raise awareness of local issues and GX (green transformation) products and services.

Why Oasys—PoS and tamper-resistance

For data management, the service uses Oasys, an environmentally conscious Proof-of-Stake (PoS) blockchain. Its tamper-resistant design is intended to ensure transparency and reliability in awarding points and recording achievements. Oasys is known as a gaming-focused Layer 1 that completed its mainnet launch in December 2022 and is now expanding into tokenized-asset infrastructure originating in Asia. Square Enix joined as one of Oasys's 21 initial validators in September 2022 and remains a validator today—building on that existing relationship to step beyond gaming into a social-issue domain.

The forward view and open questions

Japan targets carbon neutrality by 2050 and a 46% cut in greenhouse gases by fiscal 2030 versus 2013 (with the household sector needing a 66% cut). Yet consumers face barriers—"lack of information" and "difficulty acting consistently." This service tries to solve that behavior-change challenge with entertainment-style retention design. Three questions stand out. First, the blockchain's concrete role is currently limited to "ensuring record transparency," with details such as whether any token or NFT is involved undisclosed. Second, because the app champions decarbonization, choosing low-energy PoS Oasys rather than power-hungry PoW is important for consistency—and preempts the obvious criticism. Third, while subsidies underwrite early trust and funding, long-term viability hinges on shifting to ad/sponsor revenue and connecting to the common-points economy.

[Business Development Insights]

  1. This is an entertainment-meets-social-issue use case in which a major IP holder deploys blockchain not for speculation but for the "behind-the-scenes" purpose of transparent achievement records. The B2B2C structure—drawing in municipalities and companies as sponsors and mission providers—could become a new channel for corporate sponsorship and advertising within the GX context. For any business with points or membership bases, tying existing loyalty programs to "transparent, verifiable records" is broadly applicable.
  2. Oasys is expanding from a "gaming-focused L1" toward "Asia-origin tokenized-asset infrastructure," and its strategy visibly leverages existing validator IP companies like Square Enix to absorb non-gaming use cases (decarbonization, local issues). Companies with games/IP/points businesses should view app-chain L1s like Oasys as a realistic option when weighing on-chain versions and interoperability of their existing economies.
  3. Selection under the Ministry of the Environment's Deco-katsu program provides "public endorsement plus subsidy," underwriting early trust and funding—but subsidy dependence is a durability concern. Keys to commercialization are the shift to advertising/sponsor revenue, connection to the common-points/"poi-katsu" economy (exchange rates, premiums-labeling law, tax treatment), and KPI design that quantifies "behavior change." Get that right, and there is room to extend beyond decarbonization into health, local revitalization, and more.
