Is the Wallet the Next Super-App Battleground? PayPay, LINE, and au Race to Own the "On-Ramp" to Digital Assets

ウォレットは次世代スーパーアプリの本命か──PayPay・LINE・auの3陣営が競う「暗号資産の入口」

Three Major Ecosystems Enter the Wallet Race at Once

The panel featured Michihiko Kasai, CEO of au Coincheck Digital Assets; Yuki Jinguji, Deputy Head of PayPay's Finance Business Strategy Division; and Jinyoung Lee, Japan Business Leader at LINE NEXT. Each represents a strategy of embedding wallets into Japan's largest consumer platforms.

au Coincheck Digital Assets is a joint venture of KDDI (50.1%), Coincheck (40.0%), and au Financial Holdings (9.9%), and plans to launch a non-custodial wallet in summer 2026 as a mini-app inside "au PAY," which has roughly 39.67 million members. PayPay acquired a 40% stake in Binance Japan in October 2025, making it an equity-method affiliate, and is connecting its 70-million-plus user base to crypto trading. LINE NEXT officially launched its stablecoin wallet "Unifi" on LINE in March 2026; within about a month of adding support for the yen-pegged stablecoin JPYC on May 22, Unifi became the No. 1 service in Japan by JPYC circulation, and the LINE mini-app version "Unifi mini" followed on June 22.

A Shared UX Philosophy: From "Storage" to "Everyday Use"

Kasai argued that as stablecoin adoption and real-world asset tokenization advance, wallets will become touchpoints supporting daily transactions and payments rather than mere vaults. His design philosophy: users should not feel they are "using a wallet" — the technology should dissolve into the background as faster transfers and less friction. Jinguji identified users' fear of "not knowing where my money went" during crypto deposits and withdrawals as the top barrier, and described PayPay's goal of instant, transparent settlement. He also struck a cautious note about placing risk assets inside a mass-market payment app, calling for a balance of "engine and brakes." Lee positioned JPYC — rather than volatile crypto assets — as the everyday currency for payments, remittances, and rewards.

Wallets as Payment Infrastructure for the AI Agent Era

AI agents formed the panel's second axis. Kasai noted that handing full bank account credentials to an AI is impractical, making the wallet-plus-stablecoin combination a natural settlement layer for AI-driven transactions. Jinguji said AI-mediated commerce is "an imminent reality" requiring preparation now. Lee stressed that even when AI handles asset management behind the scenes, users need a UX in which they approve decisions through familiar LINE interactions and retain the sense that "I am the one deciding." How to design approval flows, autonomy limits, and liability boundaries remains an open question.

Competing with Global Platforms on "Local Experience"

Overseas momentum is accelerating: X began rolling out its fiat-based "X Money" service to some US users on June 25. Kasai argued that finance and payments retain strongly local elements — regulation, merchant networks, and commercial customs — leaving room for Japanese players to compete on end-to-end experience design within Japan. Jinguji set the trust bar at a service "grandparents back home can use with confidence," emphasizing natural Japanese-language UX, while Lee highlighted a partner ecosystem built around Japan's familiar points-and-rewards culture as Unifi's differentiator.

[Business Development Insights]

  1. The wallet race will be decided by mini-app embedding into existing ecosystems, not standalone apps. au PAY, LINE, and PayPay are all converging on the strategy of dissolving wallets into platforms with tens of millions of existing users. Web3 businesses should prioritize integration partnerships with major ecosystems — wallet SDKs, mini-app compatibility, JPYC-based reward integrations — over standalone user acquisition.
  2. AI-agent payments are being architected around wallets plus stablecoins from the start. Since bank credentials cannot safely be delegated to AI, permission-scoped wallets are likely to become the standard "account" for agentic transactions. Approval UX, liability demarcation, and spending-limit design for agents remain greenfield — early standard-setters will capture outsized opportunity.
  3. Japan's defensive moat against global platforms lies in integrating regulation, merchant networks, and cultural UX. Against global players like X Money and MetaMask, no single feature wins; but bundling points culture, native Japanese UX, domestic regulatory compliance, and merchant relationships into a holistic experience remains a domestic advantage — and drives growing integration demand for B2B enablers.
