The Shipping Label Becomes an NFT — Logizard's "Bit Waybill" Uses a Shared ID to Answer "Whose Cargo Is This?" in Joint Logistics

What has launched
Bit Waybill assigns each shipment a common ID, the BWB number, and links it to existing label data. Events such as dispatch, handover and delivery are recorded per BWB number, and the audit trail is managed on a blockchain. By treating each shipment's data as an NFT, the company says, multiple companies can share it while keeping it authentic and unique. The system is designed around APIs so that existing applications — WMS, transport management systems (TMS) and delivery management systems — can retrieve and use the data.
The problem: fragmented logistics data
Japan's driver shortage is shrinking transport capacity, while shipment data remains siloed within each company — one of the factors holding back joint and relay transport. When several carriers move cargo in relay, there has been no way to prove location and custody across companies. By turning label data into an industry-wide common layer, Bit Waybill aims to supply the data foundation for a "physical internet" in which transport capacity is shared.
Target uses include higher load factors and fewer empty runs through shared transport data, information handoffs between carriers in relay transport, and unified tracking of direct-from-manufacturer and warehouse-dispatched goods. By standardizing delivery data across shippers, carriers and warehouse operators, the company says the system can also support the baseline assessments and medium- to long-term planning required under Japan's revised Logistics Efficiency Act.
Technology and the path here
ThingsToken is an NFT technology for recording and handling real-world items — equipment, devices, documents, tickets — on a blockchain. It has been used in sake distribution and exports, and in attendee management for large events. Logizard and Plat'Home began joint research on logistics DX in February 2025, testing ThingsToken alongside Logizard ZERO, a cloud WMS used at about 2,000 logistics sites. After announcing the concept in May 2026, opening an official website in August and exhibiting at trade shows in September and October, the service has now formally launched.
An explicit investment phase
Notably, Logizard is not counting on short-term returns. It expects an operating loss of JPY 75 million from the Bit Waybill business in the fiscal year ending June 2027. The three years from FY June 2027 through FY June 2029 are defined as an investment phase, with priority on building the market and the user base. For the company as a whole, it forecasts FY June 2027 revenue of JPY 2,808 million (up 15.3%) and roughly flat operating profit of JPY 404 million, with profits from the existing WMS business absorbing the upfront investment.
Conditions for adoption
A shared infrastructure becomes more valuable as more companies join, but early participants see little benefit at first. Adoption will depend on how far the service can expand among shippers, carriers and app vendors — and on whether users of rival systems will join a platform led by a WMS vendor.
[Business Development Insights]
- The hardest part of a shared-ID platform is neutrality, not technology. Whether shippers and carriers that use competing systems will join a platform led by one WMS vendor will decide adoption. Governance choices — separating operations, clarifying data ownership, keeping APIs open — set the ceiling on network effects.
- The baseline assessments and planning required by the revised Logistics Efficiency Act create compliance-driven demand for shared label data. Selling the system as a tool for meeting obligations, rather than as new technology, is the realistic path to adoption for non-financial blockchain.
- The transport history accumulated under BWB numbers is a tamper-resistant record. In the future it could feed financial services such as early freight payment (factoring), asset-backed lending and credit assessment of carriers, creating new business opportunities at the boundary between logistics data and finance.
