Burn the NFT, Get the Real Cards — XRPL-Born "Fuzzy Cards" Shows the Promise and Pitfalls of Redeemable NFTs

NFTを燃やすと実物のカードが届く XRPL発「Fuzzy Cards」が示す「引換型NFT」の可能性と落とし穴

How an NFT becomes a voucher

The core of Fuzzy Cards' distribution is the link between a digital asset and a physical product. Users buy a digital pack minted under XLS-20, the XRPL NFT standard, and burn it on a dedicated portal. Once the burn is recorded on-chain, a sealed booster pack with five random cards is shipped. In effect, the NFT works as a redemption voucher for physical goods. Cards can also be submitted to professional graders such as CGC, PCA and TAG, connecting a digitally originated product to the grading and trading infrastructure of the existing collectibles market.

From meme token to card game

The project traces back to a trading record from the XRPL's early decentralized exchange. Based on the story of a wallet called "FuzzyBear" placing an order to trade 1 XRP for 1 BTC, the community launched the FUZZY meme token in early 2025; holders reportedly exceeded 11,500 as of October 2026. A Zug-based publisher, XPUNKS GmbH, then released the physical card game. The starter series contains 150 unique cards across three types — heroes, relics and events — and five in-game factions, with about 60 of the cards in holographic versions. Fee-based retail distribution through brick-and-mortar board-game stores has also begun.

Influencer attention versus speculation

The latest buzz came from Schwartz's post showing him opening physical packs in his kitchen and thanking whoever sent them. He also drew attention in May 2026 when he opened a trust line for the FUZZY token — the XRPL setting needed to receive a given token. At the time, he explained that opening a trust line was not an endorsement and expressed disapproval of treating meme coins as investments. The way even small actions by prominent figures are read as buy signals shows the risk in projects that combine tokens and products.

What to look at as a business

The project argues that producing physical cards takes considerable time and that balancing gameplay is complex, so similar projects will struggle to catch up quickly. At the same time, FUZZY's price is volatile, as meme tokens are, and moves with the XRP market. Judging sustainability means separating the token price from real demand for the cards as a product. A community event, "FuzzyCon," is being planned around Ripple's annual Ripple Swell 2026 conference.

Implications for Japan

In Japan's large trading-card market, scalping of limited editions and counterfeits are serious problems. Using NFTs as redemption vouchers could support fair lotteries and pre-orders, transparent redemption records and authenticity tracking. But much of the work happens off-chain — inventory, shipping, redemption deadlines and returns — so logistics and customer service design, more than Web3 technology, will decide success.

[Business Development Insights]

  1. Redeemable NFTs turn NFTs from speculative assets back into proof of a right to a physical product. For Japanese IP holders and card game companies, they are an option for fair distribution of limited editions, anti-scalping measures and transparent redemption histories. But the business is mainly inventory, shipping and customer service, and blockchain is only one part — the design should start from that premise.
  2. Selling NFTs as vouchers for physical goods may, in Japan, require analysis under rules such as the prepaid payment instrument regime and the Act against Unjustifiable Premiums and Misleading Representations. The legal treatment can change with design choices — time until redemption, treatment of unredeemed vouchers, whether secondary trading is allowed — so legal counsel should be involved from the planning stage.
  3. When a meme token and a product share one brand, influencer mentions and price swings feed straight into the product's reputation. IP owners can capture fan-community enthusiasm while limiting brand risk by keeping speculative tokens separate from product rights (redeemable NFTs).
